Today, September 10, is Suicide Prevention Awareness Day.

Life is a precious gift that can only be appreciated through experience.  Thoughts of harming oneself are a symptom of an illness that can be helped.  Suicidal thoughts are temporary, but suicidal actions are a permanent, tragic ending to life for everyone involved when someone commits suicide.

Having survived my own suicide attempt as a teenager and having battled severe depression my whole adult life, I can safely say that there is help out there.  If you feel like you’ve been to professionals for help and they didn’t help you, then you haven’t found the right professionals yet.  I can say this because I know it:  it took me a long, long time to find the mental health professionals I felt like I could really talk to, people I could share absolutely everything with.  Then, it took another long time for me, together with those professionals, to figure out the right balance of medicine and therapy.

Do not give up.  Help is out there.  As long as you are breathing, there is hope for better thoughts, for a better quality of life.  No matter what is wrong in your life, there is always hope for peace of mind within your life.

Please stay safe.  If you are having suicidal thoughts, please call 1-800-273-TALK.  If need be, do not hesitate to call 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency room.  There are trained professionals who will take you seriously and support you.  There is always hope.  Hope always returns.
