Before I get to my real post for the day, I just want to say my thoughts and prayers are with those affected by Sandy.
So….National Blog Posting Month (the REAL one!) is coming up in November, just two days away! I signed up, so here’s to a little Tickle the Sun every day for the month of November.
I’ll try to find something interesting to write about, instead of random “Post for NaBloPoMo” posts. Actually, NaBloPoMo does supply writing prompts. They’re not the most interesting questions ever, but you may expect posts based on the prompts for most of the month. As the site says, though, “weekends are for free-writing,” so I’ll still be left to my own devices for several posts.
It’s a ridiculous thing to be excited about, but I snagged spot #72 on the NaBloPoMo blogroll. I think that’s pretty darn good given that the blogroll is already up to 171 blogs.
In an effort to practice writing with prompts, I’ll go with today’s prompt from October 2012 NaBloPoMo: ”What is your favorite candy to give out?”
I like to give out pretty little bags filled with Snickers, KitKat, and Milky Ways. I have to confess, though: I haven’t actually given out candy in probably 10 years. Gone are the days of standing at Mother and Daddy’s door, watching for the cherubic faces of princesses and Supermans to come by the door, some not even remembering to say, “trick or treat!” I remember my mother spending hours to fill up as many as 200 bags in preparation for the big night.
Not this year, though. Mother and Daddy are going to the movies to escape the madness.
I don’t remember doing Halloween at all in Iowa, in those early years of our marriage, though I suspect we at least had some of Jared’s co-workers children come to our door. We haven’t been at home since Porter was a baby, for taking him out. We’d take him to friends’ houses when he was a toddler and we’ve done a few years at Grandma and Grandpa’s neighborhood, the jackpot of all trick-or-treaters’ dreams. The last three years, though, we’ve chosen to go to various churches for their fall festivals and trunk-or-treats. Then we might head to a couple of select friends’ houses, people who knew we might come by. We will likely do the same thing this year, as well.
Speaking of fall festivals: I got to go to Liam’s festival at his preschool yesterday. SO SO SO CUTE! Liam is Luigi this year and he wore his costume all day long. We had activity stations where they got candy…I manned the tattoo booth, but there was also fishing for candy, digging through spaghetti for spider rings, a color hairspray station, and face painting. They were so so so cute, I just can’t say it enough. I helped with the Pre-K’ers, but I stayed too for the 2 and 3 year olds and I’m so glad I did.
After the activities, it was back to Liam’s classroom for pizza. While we waited for lunch, though, Liam wanted me to read to him. Soon I had about 5 little ones all gathered around, listening to me read The Gruffalo, which happens to be one of my all-time favorite children’s books. Reading to them reminded me that it would be fun to volunteer in the classroom, something I put off through Porter’s years when I could volunteer in the classroom because of my illness. I hope to try harder with Liam.
Anyhow, look out for daily posts, because there’s no getting around it for the next 32 days or so!
